Pierre Gasly loses Monaco podium, Isack Hadjar reinstated in 3rd place
The 2026 Monaco Grand Prix podium has certainly been through its share of twists and turns. While Pierre Gasly had eventually regained third place in June after his penalties were cancelled, that decision has now been overturned once again.
The FIA International Court of Appeal delivered its verdict on Friday, September 4, 2026, ruling in favour of McLaren and Red Bull, which had appealed the previous decision. The two five-second penalties imposed on Pierre Gasly for speeding in the pit lane have therefore been reinstated.
Gasly drops from 3rd to 7th
Pierre Gasly originally crossed the finish line of the Monaco Grand Prix in third position with Alpine. However, two five-second penalties for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane initially dropped the French driver to seventh place in the final classification.
The case then took an unexpected turn a few days later.
Alpine requested a "Right of Review" from the FIA, arguing that the measurements used to determine the car's speed had been affected by an error concerning the length of the pit lane. The FIA accepted the request and cancelled both penalties on June 12, allowing Gasly to regain his third place.
The decision put Gasly back on the podium and moved Isack Hadjar down to fourth, despite the Red Bull driver having initially celebrated his third-place finish in Monaco.
McLaren and Red Bull appeal
The story did not end there. McLaren and Red Bull challenged the decision that had allowed Gasly to recover his podium.
A hearing was held on August 25 in Paris before the FIA International Court of Appeal. The court ultimately ruled that the original penalties should stand.
The decision published on September 4 therefore brings an end to the long-running dispute over third place in the Monaco Grand Prix.
The FIA also stressed the importance of applying the regulations consistently to all competitors, with other drivers having been penalised for similar infringements during the Monaco weekend.
Isack Hadjar regains his F1 podium
The big winner from this latest change to the classification is therefore Isack Hadjar.
The Red Bull driver officially regains third place in the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix and gets back the podium he had celebrated after the race, before losing it a few days later to his fellow Frenchman Pierre Gasly.
The decision also confirms a major milestone in his young Formula 1 career: his first podium with Red Bull.
The drivers behind the top two are also moved up one position. Oscar Piastri is fourth, Liam Lawson fifth and Arvid Lindblad sixth, while Pierre Gasly is ultimately classified seventh.

An unprecedented conclusion to the Monaco Grand Prix
The series of decisions has therefore changed the classification of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix several times.
Pierre Gasly initially finished third on the track before being penalised and dropped to seventh. Isack Hadjar then inherited the podium. A few days later, the cancellation of Gasly's penalties reversed the situation. Almost three months after the race, the International Court of Appeal has now returned to the original decision: Gasly is seventh and Hadjar third.
For Alpine, the outcome is a disappointment. The French team has expressed its disagreement with the decision while accepting the ruling and continuing its work to improve its performance. Alpine also maintains that Pierre Gasly did not actually exceed the speed limit in the pit lane.
For Isack Hadjar, meanwhile, the ruling means that his name is now definitively recorded on the podium of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix.
